I’ve been a broadcaster, an executive for some of New York’s best-known advertising agencies, managing partner of my own New York advertising agency, I held advisory and ownership positions in many Internet-based ventures during the “dot-com boom,” among other occupations.
But my favorite of all occupations has been “university professor.” The hours spent with students inside and outside classrooms have provided me with insights into the real aspirations of young people, as well as the obstacles they face.
I’ve also acquired a valuable perspective on the promises and deliverables of America’s higher education system.
I have served proudly on the Boards of Directors of the League of Advertising Agencies, Sales and Marketing Executives International, and the Florida Speakers Association. I was honored to be a judge of the Radio Mercury Awards and am also a past member of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the non-profit Center for Entrepreneurial Management. I even served on the Business Advisory Committee for New York State Assemblyman John Ravitz.
I enjoy modern jazz over smooth jazz, independent films over Hollywood blockbusters, and skiing fresh Utah snow. I’m a graduate of Kent State University. (Oh, yes, I was there.)
This is my personal blog. It’s focused on preparing students for their careers while they’re still in college. As a long-time hiring manager, and unlike HR professionals and “career coaches,” I was the executive with the authority to hire candidates presented to me by my staff. Hiring is a topic I discuss and discussed with colleagues often since a “bad hire” is one of the most costly errors one can make in business.
I’ve taught at New York University, Hofstra University, and the University of Miami and have witnessed the antiquated career advice dispensed, as well as the weak workplace skills learned at most colleges and universities. (By the way, it’s not the students’ fault.)
My mission is to help college students navigate the chasm between academia and the business sector. So, I write on accessing one’s own interests, strengths & skills; networking and social media; as well as resumes and job interviews. Sometimes I even write about stuff that doesn’t fit into any of these categories.
My goal is to create insightful, relevant content you can put to work in and for your personal and professional life. If you are a student motivated to explore who you are and the world out there—then this blog is for you.
I typically post weekly. To make sure you don’t miss my new posts, accept my invitation to subscribe via RSS or e-mail.
